Eye Conditions that require your immediate attention

Your vision or eyesight is a very important human ability. All other abilities are nearly useless without the ability to see. For this reason, JMSEC has decided to compile a list of eye conditions that may require the attention of an Optometrist. This week we have opted for a common eye condition that is mostly found in African and Asian male children: vernal conjunctivitis.

What is Vernal Conjunctivitis?

Vernal Conjunctivitis is an allergic reaction that causes discomfort, redness, and irritation in the tissues that line the eyes.

Most cases of conjunctivitis are caused by viruses or bacteria. Vernal conjunctivitis, on the other hand, is caused by an allergic reaction. It is predominantly found among African Male Children

This chronic eye inflammation initially occurs most frequently during the spring and summer months.

This is due to a seasonal increase in allergens such as pollen in the air or allergic reactions such as chlorine in swimming pools, cigarette smokes or certain ingredients in cosmetics. We also took the liberty to compile a list of symptoms that indicate this condition. See Below…

Symptoms of Vernal Conjunctivitis

The following symptoms indicate that you are prone or subject to vernal conjunctivitis.

Painful, Irritated or itchy eyes

In conclusion

It is advisable to book an appointment with an optometrist when you experience the above mentioned symptoms as this eye condition may be responsible for permanent visual impairment.
